Reactance Calculator Guide

Use this companion guide beside the interactive calculator to make sure you understand the “why” behind every click. Each section includes the classroom explanation, student-friendly language, and quick practice prompts.

Before you start

Collect the data points listed below and double-check their units. Keeping an organized “givens” list is one of the fastest ways to reduce math errors and impress exam graders.

  • reactance calculator
  • capacitive reactance
  • resonant frequency

Detailed procedure

  1. Step 1

Choose whether you're solving for Xc, XL, or the resonant frequency of a specific L and C.

  2. Step 2

Enter capacitance in microfarads and/or inductance in millihenries, matching the mode you selected.

  3. Step 3

For Xc or XL, also enter the operating frequency; skip it when solving for resonance.

Teaching & troubleshooting tips

What's the difference between reactance and resistance?

Resistance dissipates energy as heat regardless of frequency. Reactance stores and releases energy (in an electric or magnetic field) and depends on frequency — at DC, capacitors act as an open circuit (infinite Xc) and inductors as a short (zero XL).

Why does resonant frequency matter?

At resonance, an LC circuit's impedance is at a minimum (series) or maximum (parallel), which is the basis for tuning filters, oscillators, and radio receivers to a specific frequency.
